Beyond Color: How Product Stability Has Evolved
You’ve spent months developing the perfect product. The fragrance smells exactly right. The color looks beautiful. The packaging is ready. You move forward with manufacturing. Then, a few months later, something changes.
Maybe the color begins to shift or fade. A white candle starts to yellow. The fragrance doesn’t smell quite the way it did when it was first produced; or a product that looked perfect in the lab begins to change after weeks under retail lighting.
So, what happened?
Fragranced products live in a more complicated world than we sometimes realize. Light, heat, oxygen, fragrance, color, packaging, and the product base itself can all influence how a product changes over time.
The science of protecting products from these changes has evolved significantly -- and so has FCF’s approach to addressing it.
Stage One: It Started with Light
In the early days of product stabilization, the challenge seemed relatively straightforward: protect the product from light.
This was particularly important in the candle industry. Candles can spend months sitting in clear, reflective glass under bright retail lighting before ever reaching a consumer’s home.
Over time, that exposure can cause colors to fade or shift; and white or lightly colored wax to yellow. Early stabilization technology focused largely on helping protect products from the effects of UV and visible light.
It was an important first step—but the industry soon learned that light wasn’t the whole story.
Stage Two: Looking Beyond the Light
As the science advanced, formulators began to better understand the role of oxidation. Think about what happens when an apple is sliced and left on the counter. Exposure to oxygen contributes to visible changes. While the chemistry of a fragranced product is different, the basic idea is similar: ingredients can change as they interact with oxygen and their surrounding environment.
Those changes aren't always limited to color. Oxidation can potentially affect appearance, fragrance character and overall product quality.
The question was no longer simply, “How do we keep the color from fading?”
It became, “How do we help protect the overall integrity of the finished product?”
Stage Three: Understanding the Bigger Picture
The next stage brought a greater understanding of how different types of degradation can work together.
Light can start one reaction. Oxygen may contribute to another. Heat can accelerate change. Meanwhile, fragrance ingredients, dyes, and other formulation components may interact in unexpected ways.
Newer stabilization technologies were developed to address each unique part of this degradation process.
The important takeaway isn't the chemistry behind each technology. It's that product instability rarely comes from just one source.
Stage Four: Today’s Multifunctional Approach
Today, we know that protecting a fragranced product can require much more than a single UV stabilizer.
Candles, perfumes, cleaners, personal-care products and air-care products can each face different challenges. Even two fragrances used in the same product base can behave very differently over time.
With so many factors, there is no one-size-fits-all answer.
Modern stabilization has increasingly moved toward multifunctional systems designed to address several common stability challenges at the same time -- supported by more specialized solutions when a formulation presents an unusual challenge.
From Candles to a Much Bigger Stability Story
FCF's journey with stabilization began very simply in the candle industry in 1999. As our customers expanded into new categories, the questions became more complex.
What happens when fragrance interacts with a personal-care base? What about a cleaner with completely different chemistry? How will a fine fragrance hold up over time? What roles are light, oxygen, color, fragrance and packaging playing?
Our stability expertise grew exponentially as we learned to identify and design solutions for each situation.
Today, FCF works across candles, air care, fine fragrance, cleaners, personal care and other fragranced consumer products, bringing together our deep experience that encompasses fragrance, color and stability.
Sometimes the Problem Isn't What You Think It Is
We've learned that the obvious explanation isn't always the correct one.
What appears to be a light problem may have another contributing cause. What looks like fragrance discoloration may actually involve interactions between several parts of the finished formulation.
That's where FCF's testing expertise becomes particularly valuable.
Our light laboratory allows us to conduct accelerated and comparative testing under controlled conditions, helping us identify patterns of change much earlier.
Before recommending an additive, we look at the challenge, test potential solutions, and help determine the best path forward for the finished product.
